OTP Bank has launched a "green" project to collect used batteries

OTP Bank has joined the global movement aimed at protecting the environment from the toxic effects of used batteries.

Since August, special boxes have been installed in ten branches of the bank in different cities of Ukraine, in which employees and customers can leave up to 50 used batteries (you can hand over finger batteries, power banks, laptop and phone batteries).

Addresses of such branches:

  • Lviv, Chornovola street, 41;
  • Mykolayiv, Sadova street, 10;
  • Zaporizhia, Sobornyi Ave., 66;
  • Odessa, Shevchenko Avenue, 4-A;
  • Dnipro, Shevchenko street, 53;
  • Kharkiv, Bath lane, 1;
  • Kyiv, Zhylyanska street, 43;
  • Kyiv, Mykhailivska street, 2;
  • Kyiv, Raisa Okipna street, 4;
  • Brovary, Independence blvd., 3.

One box holds up to 10 kg of batteries. After filling it, the bank will send the box to public organization "Batteries, get in", which sends the batteries collected throughout Ukraine to GreenWEEE battery recycling plant in Romania and will receive a report on their recycling.

More than 95% of all used batteries in Ukraine are dumped in landfills and contaminate the soil. One battery, which gets into nature without recycling, can contaminate from 16 to 20 square meters of soil with toxic substances – magnesium, mercury, tin, lead, cadmium and other heavy metals. However, recycling batteries in the world is a relatively new practice, and in the EU, for example, there is no plant that would recycle all types of batteries. Each plant has a partnership with other companies, where it sends those batteries that it does not recycle itself.

The Romanian plant GreenWEEE, which receives batteries collected in Ukraine, has been operating since 2007 and annually processes 50,000 tons of electronic equipment – from refrigerators to used batteries.
