Caring for the environment: OTP BANK transferred 120 kg of used batteries for recycling in 2025

OTP BANK JSC, which actively supports initiatives aimed at protecting the environment from the toxic impact of used batteries, collected and transferred 120 kg of spent portable batteries for recycling in 2025. In total, since the launch of this green initiative in 2021, implemented by the Bank in partnership with the NGO “Batteries, Give Up!”, 776 kg of used batteries have already been collected.

Special collection boxes for spent power sources have been installed in the customer areas of OTP Bank branches across Ukraine. Both clients and employees can dispose of AA and AAA batteries, power banks, mobile phone and laptop batteries, as well as various types of button cell batteries. During a single visit to the Bank, each customer may hand over up to 50 portable batteries or accumulators, thereby contributing to a systematic environmental initiative. The full list of branches equipped with such collection boxes is available via the link.

All collected batteries are transferred by OTP BANK to its partner, the NGO “Batteries, Give Up!”. The organisation’s specialists ensure their delivery to the Recupyl recycling facility in Poland, from where part of the batteries is further transported to other processing plants, including Erasteel in France, Accurec in Germany, Elemental and B&R in Poland, among others.

According to “Batteries, Give Up!”, more than 3,500 tonnes of AA batteries are imported into Ukraine annually, while only about 6% of this volume is recycled. A single improperly disposed battery can contaminate up to 16 square metres of soil with toxic substances, making the systematic collection and recycling of power sources critically important for reducing environmental damage.

For reference, in 2024, as part of this environmental project, 185 kg, or approximately 9,000 units, of used batteries of various types were collected at OTP BANK branches.
